Amy
Paul was an amazing speaker and I feel blessed that I had the opportunity
to hear what she had to all say. Amy was a UW-Whitewater student, just like me,
three years ago. At first, she had the four year plan mapped out to obtain a degree
in Music. Little did Amy know, public relations would soon overpower her music interest
and become a huge part of her life.
Amy’s professional experiences are very
impressive and she has had a lot of great experiences at a variety of
companies.

Amy is currently working at Ascedia and
couldn’t be happier with her decision. She offered great advice to us students
when talking about taking on challenges and extra projects to gain experience
in the PR field. She stressed to us about taking opportunities if we feel like
we can do them and run with it. Amy had a lot of projects come her way and she
powered through them and it created a window of opportunities for her. I was
honestly so surprised when Amy told us that she had to write a press release
right away when she first got hired after graduation. That made my heart sink
because I would stress out if a company asked me to write a press release right
away in an x amount of time. I know and understand that it’s the real world and
that’s going to happen, but I would probably have to double check old releases
to reference. She also stressed on how important it is to get internships and
make connects and keep them! Internships
are used as a gateway into a company to hopefully land you a job and also a
chance to gain great experience. It stressed me out at that moment because I’ve
only had one internship and she’s had over five! I feel like I need to get more
involved now to keep building up my resume. I also liked how she told us to
have fun because it’s important to look at opportunities in a positive way and
enjoy what you’re doing.
I'm so glad to hear that I was not the only one who's heart dropped when she said that she had to write one her first day! As soon as I left class on Wednesday I looked at my old press releases!! Crazy to think that just a few years ago she was in the same place as us, and now she is so successful! Makes me excited for my life after UWW.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I agree with you on the whole being stressed out thing! Amy's background is extremely impressive with all of her internships and with her committed involvement in PRSSA, she seems like the perfect candidate to hire! It makes me feel like I need to step up my game to have a more impressive background/gain experience like she did! But as stressful as everything is, like you noted it is important to have fun and look at all of our opportunities positively.
ReplyDeleteThe future is a scary thing especially when you hear that you could be jumping right into the fire after being hired. When I think about having to write press releases or any other type of public relations content, I hope I have time to Google search the proper methods for writing a press release. It’s very impressive that she had 5 internships and if it makes you feel any better I don't have any internships under my belt. Also if it makes you feel any better I know a guy who tried to fail one class so he could stay another year at whitewater and he was hired for sales in wine and spoke person for the company he works for right out of college.
ReplyDeleteIf a company told me to write a press release as soon as I was hired I wouldn't know what to do! The thought of being thrown into a job that is foreign to me is so scary! Luckily, I most likely will enjoy working in the world of communications and will hopefully be prepared to overcome any obstacles thrown my way with the help from internships, networking, and Amy's speech.
ReplyDeleteI was also surprised when Amy had to write a press release on her first day! I thought the first day was for orientations! But, I think it's good to remember that the PR industry is very fast-paced, and we all need to be ready to jump right in!
ReplyDeleteI thought Amy Paul did a great job at showing the class what to expect in our futures. She also was good at letting us know what is expected of us coming out of school, and how important it is to get a head start and to make keep connected to the people that we meet along the way. I felt that she was very professional and knowledgeable on everything that she has learned so far. I can only hope to be as far as Amy is with only three years out of college.
